2024 TUM-Georgetown Neuroengineering Summer School

Neuroengineering for Improving Quality of Life
June 18th – 23st 2024

The Center for Neuroengineering’s second annual Summer School in Neuroengineering was held this summer at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) from June 18th to June 23rd, 2024, in Munich, Germany. The topic for this exciting event was “Neuroengineering for Improving Quality of Life”.

Georgetown University Medical Center is an internationally recognized academic medical center, with a strong research focus on neuroscience. It is also home to a renowned bioethics center that is rooted in its commitment to inquiry and discovery based in Jesuit values to pursue outcomes for the common good. TUM, GUMC’s partner in the Center for Neuroengineering, is among the world leaders in robotics and neurotechnology and is based in Munich, Germany.

At the summer school, prominent speakers from GUMC, TUM, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Paris-Lodron-Universität Salzburg, and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg gave talks on current topics in Neuroengineering. The summer school also included student workshops, a student poster session, laboratory tours and a tour of the city.

Quotes from our students:

“This was a fantastic summer school. Big thanks to our TUM partners for hosting it! An excellent opportunity for the Georgetown students to be exposed to new fields such as robotics for rehabilitation and for them and our faculty to develop new and deepen existing collaborations, like the one funded by the recent CNE Pilot award to Georgetown’s Dr. Ella Striem-Amit and TUM’s Dr. Cristina Piazza to develop prosthetics with more intuitive control . I’m already looking forward to the next neuroengineering summer school at Georgetown next summer!” — Max Riesenhuber Professor of Neuroscience, Georgetown University Medical Center

“Despite the fact that we had to compete with the European Soccer tournament, we all had a great time.” — Josef Rauschecker, Professor of Neuroscience, Georgetown University Medical Center

We extend our deepest gratitude to Nicholas (MS’87, M’91) and Effie Theodore for their generous support, which made it possible for our students to attend the 2024 TUM-Georgetown Neuroengineering Summer School. Their commitment to advancing education in neuroengineering is providing our students with an extraordinary opportunity to collaborate with global experts, and explore groundbreaking advancements in this innovative field.

Please join us for the third annual Summer School to be held at Georgetown University in June, 2025.  More information will be forthcoming.
